BURLINGTON, N.C. — Her beloved youth group graduated and moved on. Haley Henderson is now one of only a handful of people her age at her church.

“We don’t have many young adults, [it’s a] can ‘count on one hand’ kind of thing,” said Rev. Jimmy Weaver of Davis Street United Methodist Church.

But instead of switching churches, she decided to do something about it in a big way. Henderson took on a huge undertaking in hopes of recruiting more young people to her church.

“The older people can meet the younger people like me, both can see we’re really not all that different,” said Henderson.

She successfully organized a “Stop Hunger Now” fundraiser for the church. The church will package up 10,000 meals for hungry families around the world.

Putting together the event brought financial and logistical hurdles Henderson had to overcome. With the immediate help of the congregation, Henderson raised the funds for the event and then lined up the volunteers.

“I had people coming up and giving me $100 checks within 15 minutes after talking to the congregation about it. What’s really important to me though is the fellowship. We’ll be standing around tubs of rice. Everyone will get to know each other. It will be fun.

Henderson is encouraging everyone to come out and help in the event. It’s next Saturday, Nov. 15 at Davis Street United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
